What an M4A file actually is
M4A is what an iPhone produces when you hit record in Voice Memos. It wraps AAC audio in an MPEG-4 container, and at the same bitrate AAC preserves more detail than MP3 — which makes M4A one of the better formats to hand a transcription model.
What it means for your transcript
Because M4A usually comes straight off a phone, the limiting factor is rarely the codec and almost always the microphone position. A phone on a table two metres from the speaker produces a technically excellent file of poor audio.
The usual problem with M4A
iPhone Voice Memos has a lossless setting that produces much larger files. If your recording is unexpectedly big, that setting is why.
Getting better results
- → Put the phone within arm's reach of whoever is speaking — it improves accuracy more than any file setting.
- → M4A works directly, so there is no need to convert it to MP3 first.
